Irsengund is a village located about one kilometer southeast of the main town Oberreute in the Westallgäu region. The village is situated near the state border with Vorarlberg in Austria to the south, and the B 308 cross-alpine road to the north. The name Irsengund is believed to refer to the personal name Irso or Irse, possibly with a Latin origin related to the words Ursus or Ursinus. The suffix -gund comes from the Romanesque word cumb(et)a, meaning a high valley or alpine meadow in mountain saddles between rocks. Therefore, the name Irsengund translates to "(settlement) near the high meadow of Irse." The village was first mentioned in 1338 as Irsigunt when it passed into the possession of Count Wilhelm von Montfort. In 1771, the consolidation of land ownership took place in Irsengund with 33 participants. The village was once part of the Simmerberg court in the Bregenz domain. Due to its prominent location overlooking the Hochgratkette mountain range, there has been an increase in the construction of second homes in Irsengund since the 1960s.
