Kappel is a district of Freiburg im Breisgau with its own local administration. It was incorporated into Freiburg on July 1, 1974. The village has around 2700 inhabitants (2010) and is located in the eastern part of the city, south of the Dreisam river and the Höllentalbahn railway. Kappel is situated in a southern side valley of the Dreisam valley at the foot of the 1284 m high Schauinsland in the Black Forest.

The closest airport is EuroAirport Bâle-Mulhouse-Fribourg, which is 60 minutes away by car. Kappel is connected to Freiburg through the neighboring district of Littenweiler.
