Late autumn and winter minimum temperatures frequently drop below zero, albeit by a few degrees. It is precisely the low night temperatures that create a different climate in the southern areas of this city. As in other pre-alpine cities in Lombardy, fog is an infrequent phenomenon. Since 1960, it has been home to the only Italian seat of the European School created for the children of European officials of the Joint Research Centre. The airports of Milan Malpensa and Lugano Agno are about 30 minutes away. The shores of Lake Maggiore can be reached in 20 minutes by car.
