Palaces, castles, manor houses - living like a king in France

Living like a fairy tale in a beautiful chateau, a magnificent castle or a stately manor house - it's not just girls' dreams that come true when they think about it. Palaces, castles and manor houses are associated with numerous stories and take us back to a time long before and long after. Receptions in grand halls, knightly banquets or intoxicating parties were celebrated in these historic buildings. And with irrepressible endurance, these unique buildings are also very close to the Lucerne region.

Castles and fortresses originally had a similar meaning. In the Middle Ages, it was primarily the door bolt that was referred to as a castle and later the meaning was transferred to a building. While a castle was used for protection and defense, in which one could lock oneself in, a fortress was used for concealment. Since the 20th century, the term "castle" has mostly been applied to medieval fortifications, while "palace" generally describes an unfortified residential building owned by the nobility.

The manor house, on the other hand, differs from the castle less in terms of its inhabitants than in terms of its function. It is always the center of the estate, like the manor, vineyard or noble estate. A lord of the manor, who could, but did not have to be a nobleman, was a landowner and employer and was usually also able to administer justice and pass judgment on his estate.

Castles and fortresses in the Lucerne region

There are also many magnificent buildings in the Lucerne region that are open to the public or privately owned. Schlössli Utenberg in Lucerne with its restaurant, Schauensee Castle above Kriens, Neu-Habsburg Castle in Meggen and Meggenhorn Castle are always worth a visit.

The private owners of the Götzental country estate, also known as Allenwinden Castle, in Dierikon, Hünenberg Castle in Ebikon and Thorenberg Castle in Littau are all dream homes. These properties are not open to the public.
