The city of Varese is situated on the shores of its namesake lake. It is called the Garden City due to its numerous splendid private and public gardens within the municipality. Varese lies on seven hills: Colle di San Pedrino (402 m), Colle di Giubiano (407 m), Colle Campigli (453 m), Colle di Sant'Albino (406 m), Colle di Biumo Superiore (439 m), Colle di Montalbano (411 m), and Colle dei Miogni (492 m). The municipal territory ranges from 238 to 1,150 meters above sea level. Varese’s winters are little influenced by the moderating effect of Lake Maggiore and other smaller lakes in the province. Late-autumn and winter minimum temperatures frequently drop, albeit slightly, below zero. These low nighttime temperatures create a distinct climate compared to areas south of this city. Like other Lombard pre-Alpine cities, fog is a rare phenomenon here. Since 1960, it has hosted the only Italian location of the European School, established for the children of European officials at the Joint Research Center. Milan Malpensa and Lugano Agno airports are about 30 minutes away. The shores of Lake Maggiore are a 20-minute drive away.
