The municipality consists of two inhabited centers, Lavena and Ponte Tresa. Lavena is the oldest historical nucleus of the municipality, probably already existing before the 10th century BC; Ponte Tresa is documented from 875 AD. The name Lavena is certainly of pre-Celtic origin and, according to some local historians, "Ven," preceded by late Latin articles, means "water channel." The first village probably arose here on terraces and tall stilt houses along the entire canal (now the Stretto), inhabited by Ibero-Ligurian and Celtic populations. Lavena Ponte Tresa is a municipality located along the western shore of Lake Lugano or Ceresio, with about 6,000 inhabitants. The territory is situated at an altitude between 275 and 305 meters. From the slopes of Monte Marzio, overlooking the town of Lavena, some torrential streams descend, such as the Mariano and the Viso; from those sloping towards Ponte Tresa, the courses of the Tarca and Dovrana streams with abundant water flow throughout the year. The municipality has all essential services and also enjoys a good urban services network: buses, a boat service connecting to Switzerland, and a railway station connecting Varese-Milan and Switzerland. Lavena Ponte Tresa is 21 km from Varese and the motorway access to Milan, 60 km from Malpensa International Airport, 1.5 km from the Ponte Tresa customs office, 13 km from the center of Lugano, and 7 km from Lugano-Agno Airport.
