In addition, the 5.5 km long Mappo - Morettina car tunnel was opened in 1996, directly linking Tenero with the centre of Locarno and considerably reducing traffic. Locarno is probably the most climatically favoured city in Switzerland. Almost 2300 hours of sunshine a year at an average temperature of 15.5 °C allow flora and fauna to develop favourably. The mild Mediterranean climate favours an early spring, a long, hot summer with little rainfall and an autumn that lasts until November. The cultural highlight is the film festival, which takes place every year in August.
