In progressGosau is a picturesque municipality in the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut and belongs to the district of Gmunden. It lies in an idyllic valley and is surrounded by impressive mountains. The municipality extends in the south of the district of Gmunden, in the middle of the Dachstein West mountain region. The valley runs from west to east and is framed by the foothills of the imposing Dachstein massif. Gosau borders the province of Salzburg and is close to popular tourist destinations such as Hallstatt, Bad Goisern and Obertraun. The landscape is dominated by the striking Dachstein, which shapes the region. Gosau is particularly famous for its picturesque lakes, the Vorderer and Hinterer Gosausee. These lakes are popular excursion destinations and offer a breathtaking backdrop with the Dachstein massif in the background. The center of Gosau lies at around 767 meters above sea level, while the surrounding mountains are significantly higher. The highest point nearby is the Hohe Dachstein at 2,995 meters. The region around Gosau is characterized by dense forests, alpine pastures and mountain meadows, which offer numerous hiking and cycling trails and lead through the picturesque landscape. Gosau is located in the Dachstein West ski area and offers great conditions for skiers and snowboarders in winter. However, Gosau is also a paradise for sports enthusiasts outside of the ski season, offering a wide range of outdoor activities in nature. Gosau can be reached via the main road 166, which runs through the valley. The nearest larger towns are Bad Ischl and Gmunden, as well as Salzburg, which are around 30 to 40 kilometers away.
