Ciudad Vieja – the oldest part of the city of Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, draws visitors for its history and cultural museums and grand centuries-old landmarks, e.g. the Palacio Salvo or the neoclassical Metropolitan Cathedral, which overlooks quaint Plaza Matriz and the Solis Theatre with its diverse performing arts program. Lively steakhouses fill up quickly at the Mercado del Puerto indoor market – a traditional venue for Uruguyan food and beverages. In the last couple of years the “Ciudad Vieja” has gone through a major transformation that has made it the main nightlife centre in town offering a mix of hip cocktail bars and old-school cafes. It is in this area where most of the nightclubs are. The main port of Uruguay (being the main Big Draft port in southern South America) is located in this neighborhood as well as it is the main port for international ships and ferries.
