Pocitos. The name Pocitos originates from the beginning of the 19th century when the area was used by washerwomen who made small wells ("pocitos") next to a freshwater channel that was later called Arroyo de los Pocitos. It is one of the main neighbourhoods in the Uruguayan capital and is characterized by architecture which comprises ten to twenty-storey apartment buildings that border the Río de la Plata and coexist with some older buildings. It is one of the areas chosen by the Uruguayan upper middle and upper class, as well as by young people who want to become independent, due to the wide range of apartments the place has to offer. In Pocitos, there are various businesses including restaurants and services and infrastructure, combining to create a special urban hub. It is metropolitan and modern with a lot to offer, which has made it the most densely populated neighbourhood in Montevideo according to the census carried out in 2011.
