A traditional fishing village, Costa da Caparica was transformed during the 20th century into the most popular beach in the Lisbon region, whose location and ease of access attract crowds on summer weekends. The sandy beach stretches for around 25 kilometres and offers a choice between the most popular beaches near the town and areas that are practically deserted. A picturesque train, the ‘Transpraia’, runs between the town's beaches and Fonte da Telha at the terminus of the line, with several stops along the way. The various beaches offer excellent conditions for practising various sports, such as surfing, beach volleyball (in places adapted for this purpose) and also many bars which, as well as support infrastructures, are lively nightlife centres. As a fishing town, the region's gastronomic speciality is fish dishes, particularly Caldeiradas, which is the focus of an annual gastronomic festival.
