Canha is one of the three parishes of the Municipality of Montijo that constitute the exclave located to the east of the main portion (in fact, of smaller territorial extension), where the municipal headquarters is located. The other two parishes in the exclave are Pegões and Santo Isidro de Pegões. Canha was a town and county seat between 1172 and 1836, and was then integrated into the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo. It regained the status of municipality for a short period in 1838, and was then definitively integrated into the current municipality. It consisted only of the village parish and had, in 1801, 992 inhabitants.
