Location: Setúbal, Setubal

Setúbal was born of the river and the sea. Records of human occupation in the municipality date back to prehistoric times, with numerous remains dating back to the Neolithic period. It was visited by Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians, who came to Iberia in search of salt and tin, particularly to Alcácer do Sal, a town to which the river was then navigable. During the Roman occupation, Setúbal experienced enormous development. The Romans installed fish salting factories and ceramic kilns in the town, which they also developed. The fall of the Roman empire, barbarian invasions and constant piracy caused the town to stagnate, if not disappear, between the 6th and 12th centuries. Particularly in the last century, there are no records of the town, sandwiched between the Christian Palmela and the Arab Alcácer do Sal. The town is located 32 kilometres south-east of Lisbon, on the north bank of the mouth of the River Sado, and is flanked to the west by the Arrábida mountain range. The urbanised area is approximately 10 km². According to the 2011 census, the municipality of Setúbal had a working-age population of 58,514 people, including 15.6 per cent were unemployed. Of those who were employed, 1.6 per cent worked in the primary sector, 24.9 per cent in the secondary sector and 73.5 per cent in the tertiary sector. Setúbal stands out for its pulp, paper, cement, fertilisers, pesticides, other plant protection products, thermoelectric power, shipbuilding and ship repair industries. The Port of Setúbal handled 7.008 million tonnes in 2013, an increase of 950 million tonnes compared to 2012. In 2012, in terms of cargo handled, the Port of Setúbal ranked 4th among Portugal's ports, with 7.4% of the country's cargo handled. In 2015, the Livramento fish market in Setúbal was considered one of the most famous fish markets in the world by USA Today.
