The charming village of Ferragudo is only 10 min away on foot. With its white houses that descend to the banks of the River Arade, it is a picturesque fishermen's village, located in front of Portimão, a town with which it once shared responsibility for defending the coast, a task assigned to the fortresses of the two localities, which could make crossfire defending the area from enemy attacks. There are traces that attest to our human presence in prehistoric times. The Romans settled there, dedicating themselves to fishing and the fish salting industry, as the archaeological findings found near the Fort of S. João do Arade prove. The present settlement will have been born around the 14th century. According to historical sources, the toponym Ferragudo comes from the existence of an iron mill, implanted in Praia da Angrinha, whose purpose was to raise the fish and the goods of the vessels that docked there.
