Praça da Alegria is a square in the parish of Santo António, in Lisbon, close to Avenida da Liberdade. The square has a central terraced area, occupied by the Alfredo Keil Garden. On the west side of the garden there is a bust of Alfredo Keil, musician, painter and poet, composer of the music for A Portuguesa. History Before the 1755 Earthquake, the area of Cotovia de Baixo or Alegria was an agricultural suburb, adjacent to the large Companhia de Jesus farm, corresponding to the current Botanical Garden) and extending to Rato. The urbanization of the square began in the transition to the 19th century, and accelerated in the middle of the same century, coinciding with the creation of the Passeio Público. The Feira da Alegria was held in the Praça da Alegria area, a stage in the life of the Flea Market after the 1755 Earthquake and which lasted until 1835, when it was transferred to Campo de Santana.
