An open door to the south of Portugal, bathed by the Atlantic and the River Tagus, with Christ the King embracing Lisbon, Almada benefits from an excellent geographical location, with the most beautiful panoramic views over the capital. The wide and long beaches of fine white sand, with the desirable ocean inviting you to swim and practise sea sports, are overwhelmingly awarded the blue flag. The secular Mata dos Medos, which paints the magnificent Arriba Fóssil in green, and the extensive urban parks are verdant. Almada is an openly natural and sustainable destination, where gastronomy, culture, religious heritage and history merge in a territory that has long belonged to many.
As a backdrop to the immensity of the Atlantic, we find the municipality's largest natural space, the Protected Landscape of the Arriba Fóssil da Costa da Caparica, a protected area with great geological and geomorphological importance, native vegetation and rare species of fauna and flora. Here, let yourself fall in love with the Medos National Forest Botanical Reserve, where the pine forest offers several hiking trails that reach the viewpoints overlooking the beaches. Contributing to the conservation and sustainability of this area, the new walkways in Mata dos Medos are a must-see. The area is also a reference point for lovers of extreme sports, cycling, horseback riding and picnics.
The municipality also has the best conditions for golf and urban parks and gardens that make Almada one of the 10 greenest cities in Portugal. Special mention should be made of the Parque da Paz, considered the “lung of the city”, or the Jardim do Rio, whose Panoramic Elevator takes you up to the historic center.
On a visit to a municipality as multifaceted as Almada, the historical heritage doesn't go unnoticed either. The Sanctuary of Christ the King, Almada's ex-libris, offers a breathtaking panoramic view over the region and attracts thousands of visitors and pilgrims, making it the perfect starting point for a visit to the rest of the municipality's heritage: the Casa da Cerca and its Botanical Garden, the Convento dos Capuchos, the Solar dos Zagallos or the Fragata D. Fernando II e Glória, among many other spaces, museums, churches and archaeological sites are not to be missed.
Almada is also culture. Throughout the year it is possible to enjoy musical, theater and dance events, many of which are internationally renowned, in a very diverse and dynamic agenda.
