Portimão, the largest city in the Western Algarve with all the infrastuctures is as well at short distance. It was once a place where boat building, sardine fishing and fish processing accounted for most of the city's activity. However, most of this industry has been replaced by tourism, entertainment and services, turning it into a large residential town, in perfect harmony with its pedestrianised historic centre and riverside areas. This evolution has transformed the city into an attractive place for shopping and admiring its history and proximity to the river and sea. The old and busy fishing docks have also been transformed into a long promenade integrated with the tree-lined squares of the old town where there is no shortage of cafés, bars and restaurants to enjoy the excellent traditional gastronomy and pastries with an unobstructed view. Just a few minutes from the city centre is the iconic Praia da Rocha with its vast sandy beach, crystal clear water and majestic cliffs that stretch to the beaches of Amado and Vau. Ferragudo and Carvoeiro, the thermal baths of Monchique, Lagos (the city of the discoveries) and even Sagres are between 20 to 30 minutes away. Lisbon and Seville are at about 2,5 hours and Faro airport is only 45 minutes away.
