Amstelveen

Amstelveen: popular location in a green environment

In 2003, Amstelveen was elected the most attractive larger town in the Netherlands. Some of the positive aspects include its easy accessibility, safety, its many cultural attractions, and its proximity to Amsterdam. It still has a rather ‘aged’ population, but the number of younger people and families is expected to increase steadily. The high-end Stadshart Amstelveen Shopping Centre is popular with the residents as well as with many people from outside Amstelveen who like to shop here. The town is in a beautiful green environment near the Amsterdam Forest, the green area Amstelland, and several unique parks.

Short history

Amstelveen lies at a stone's throw from Schiphol Airport and has a population of over 90,000. Until 1964, the municipality was called Nieuwer-Amstel. During the 17th and 18th centuries, many affluent families from Amsterdam moved to the village it was then for more peace and quiet. After the Second World War, Nieuwer-Amstel developed and expanded rapidly and it was even the fastest-growing municipality in the Netherlands during the 1960s. Nowadays, it is a desirable location for those who work in Amsterdam or at Schiphol Airport. Organisations such as KLM, Zwitserleven, and KPMG have their headquarters here and the municipality is trying hard to further expand the office market although it feels the competition with the De Zuidas area. The average income for Amstelveen is €40,200 per household.

Housing and living

The town has many different neighbourhoods, all with their own character. The largest neighbourhood is Middenhoven and the historic centre is called Oude Dorp. The Keizer Karelpark is a very green area. The different residential areas offer plenty of opportunities for both single and multi-person households. Amstelveen has a very varied housing market with a wide range of apartments, family homes, and villas, so it offers suitable housing for everyone. Not just for families with children, but also for singles and expats who need to relocate to the Netherlands and work for companies and organisations in, for example, Amsterdam.

Green municipality and public transport

Thanks to the Amsterdam Forest and many other parks, Amstelveen is a very green town. The Amsterdam Forest is located along almost the entire western edge of the town and is an amazing place for relaxing and outdoor pursuits. The Broersepark, within the town, and Groengebied Amstelland on the eastern edge are also wonderful green and quiet areas. Amstelveen is very easy to reach via the A9 motorway and tram line 5 offers a direct link to Amsterdam City Centre. Apart from that, there is the new tram line 6 that runs between the town and Station Amsterdam-Zuid, ideal for those who work in the De Zuidas area.

A rental or owner-occupied house in green Amstelveen offers comfortable living just outside our bustling capital.
