Location: Noceto, Emilia-Romagna

The territory of Noceto has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with the first human settlements dating back to the Paleolithic, as evidenced by the discovery of stone tools. During the Bronze Age, terramare villages were established—organized structures that left traces in the fertile soils. The Taro River valley later became an important natural corridor between Emilia and the Tyrrhenian Sea, through which the Ligurians settled during the Iron Age, favoring the forests of the Apennines. The Roman conquest of the territory dates back to 183 BC, with settlements from the early imperial period, and the first mention of Noceto appears in 835 AD. Subsequently, Noceto passed to the Este family, who faced the difficult task of defending the territory against the expansionist ambitions of the Pallavicino family, who eventually prevailed after several years. The history of Noceto is closely tied to the events surrounding its castle, particularly the fertile lands nearby, which were coveted by local lords over the centuries and became the site of fierce struggles, with various feudal rulers coming to power. In 1545, the lands became part of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. After years of conflict and famine, the situation improved under the Farnese, with agricultural developments and the growth of the silk industry through the cultivation of white mulberry trees. Under the Bourbons and Minister Du Tillot, advancements were made in education, infrastructure, and agriculture, while the castle gradually lost its military function. In 1805, under Napoleon, Noceto became a municipality, adopting French laws and a new administrative system. The first mayor, Giuseppe Santelli, was appointed, bringing a modern organizational structure to the area. With Maria Luigia of Austria, Parma returned to being a duchy, and in 1859, Noceto was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. Noceto took part in social movements, such as the 1908 strike, and contributed during the World Wars. After the Liberation in 1945, the municipality resumed its democratic path. Post-war developments saw agricultural modernization, mechanization, and economic growth, which improved the population’s living conditions. The area has always been valued for its tranquility, hillside microclimate, and excellent soil quality. Its proximity to the city and the convenience of transport links make this part of the province highly appreciated.
