The determiner Olonae or Oronae, which appeared after the year 1000 to distinguish this town from others with the same name, emphasizes Olgiate's belonging to the Olona Valley, flanked and crossed by the road connecting the Duchy of Milan with the nearby Swiss Confederation. In the Middle Ages, the Roman village developed into a parish, whose ecclesiastical jurisdiction lasted until 1583, and its civil jurisdiction until 1784, encompassing a vast district extending from Cairate to Cislago and Sacconago, including Busto Arsizio. Thus, throughout the Middle Ages, Olgiate Olona was a religious and administrative center, first within the County of Seprio, and from 1395 within the Duchy of Milan. Today, the local economy is supported by industry and services. The Busto Arsizio train station, 2 km away, connects Varese in 22 minutes, Milan in 30 minutes, and Malpensa Airport in a 10-minute journey. The A8 "dei laghi" motorway provides easy access to numerous points of interest, such as Milan, Varese, Lake Maggiore, and Malpensa Airport via the SS 336 highway.
