Lavena is the oldest historical nucleus of the municipality, probably already existing before the 10th century BC; Ponte Tresa is known from the year 875. The name Lavena is certainly of pre-Celtic origin and according to some local historians, "Ven" preceded by late Latin articles means "water channel". Here, in fact, arose the first village probably on terraces and high stilts along the entire canal (today the Stretto) inhabited by Iberian-Ligurian and Celtic populations. Lavena Ponte Tresa is a municipality located along the western shore of Lake Lugano or Ceresio, with about 6 thousand inhabitants. The territory is situated at an altitude of between 275 and 305 metres. From the slopes of Monte Marzio, above the village of Lavena, descend some rials with a torrential character such as the Mariano and the Viso; from those descending towards Ponte Tresa the courses of the Tarca and Dovrana torrents with abundant water regime all year round. The municipality has all the essential services and also enjoys a good line of urban services, bus, boat connecting Switzerland and train station connecting Varese-Milan and Switzerland. Lavena Ponte Tresa is 21 km from Varese and from the motorway access to Milan, 60 km from Malpensa International Airport, 1. 5 km from Ponte Tresa Customs, 13 km from the centre of Lugano and 7 km from Lugano-Agno Airport.
