Alcamo was chosen by the Elymians, Romans and Byzantines for its strategic position on the western access routes to Palermo. With the Arabs (14th century) it earned the name Alqamah and the rank of farmhouse around the castle. It rises at the foot of Mount Bonifato and has been named wine city and city of art. Alcamo with its castle of the Counts of Modica, its historical centre rich in palaces, churches and works of art is one of the most renowned centres in the province for its history, culture and traditions. Its position on the slopes of Mount Bonifato, considered the 'rooftop of western Sicily' on which the Bosco d'Alcamo Reserve is located, also makes it one of the most evocative municipalities for its enchanting views suspended between the sky and the sea with the stunning backdrop of the Gulf of Castellammare. The surrounding territory, strongly characterised by the extraordinary geometry of the 'espalier' or 'tendone' vineyards, is one of the most renowned wine-producing areas in Italy. In particular, the 'Bianco d'Alcamo' is one of the most prized and appreciated, and was awarded the 'Denominazione d'Origine Controllata' in 1972. A few kilometres from the city centre is the hamlet of Alcamo Marina, a much sought-after seaside resort thanks to its almost 5 km of sandy coastline. Of great attraction, in c/da Ponte Bagni, are the suggestive thermal baths, known as Segestane, a place where nature, thanks to the presence of hot water springs, offers the exclusive opportunity to enjoy thermal baths of a unique and unforgettable character.
