Location: Uboldo, Lombardy

Uboldo is located in the southeastern appendix of the province of Varese, in the vicinity of the towns of Gerenzano and Origgio; it is also located 3 km southwest of Saronno the largest city nearby. Milan, to which it is connected by a bus service, is 22 km away. The built-up area is characterized by an ancient nucleus; there are four peripheral districts, originating from the farmsteads called Girola, Soccorso, Malpaga (all three to the north) and Regosella (to the south), respectively. The municipality of Uboldo underwent a transformation in an industrial sense at the beginning of our century: the 1960s and the following years saw a strong population increase from 4,400 inhabitants in 1950 to 10,656 today. Several were the powerful families of Uboldo, the Crivelli family being undoubtedly the oldest to which in modern times the Villani family succeeded as lords of Uboldo. Every year in Uboldo, between the first and second week of June, the Palio is held, with the four contrade of Bell, Lazzarett, San Cosma and Taron clashing. The event was held from 1975 to 1992, then resumed from 2005.
