Location: Spinazzola, Apulia

Spinazzola is a municipality in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, with just over 6000 inhabitants, located on the western side of the Murge Pugliesi, on a hilly area called "Spinazzola Saddle", 435 meters above sea level. The town is located on a terrace surrounded by escarpments overlooking the valley of the river Locone, the main tributary of the river Ofanto. With the demolition of the castle Pignatelli at the beginning of the 20th century, in Spinazzola are preserved the remains of a medieval wall, a commanderia of the order Gerosolimitano and the sixteenth-century mother church (San Pietro Apostolo) and the first Templar hospital in Puglia. Ruins of the castle of Garagnone located in the homonymous district, on the rocks of the Murgia, between Poggiorsini and Spinazzola, belonged to the Grimaldi of Monaco. Near Spinazzola are also the ruins of the Norman castle. Another monument in Spinazzola is the Epitaph, located in the homonymous locality, a historical artefact built in 1631 to remember the old "Tratturo Regio Melfi-Castellaneta" that at the time of the Romans allowed the herds to move. The nearest towns to Spinazzola within a maximum of 30 km radius are Monte Vulture and the Lakes of Monticchio, the Castle of Melfi, the Castle of Monteserico, the Castle of Monte, the Castle of Lagopesole, Matera, the Cathedral and the Castle of Trani, the Castle of Barletta , Minervino Murge and Gravina and the Archaeological Park of Brotomagno.
