Originally a small historic fishing village, it is now an important and well-known tourist - seaside resort in the area, especially in the summer period; the coast is typically low and sandy. Currently, two main areas can be recognized in Cavi: the older, but now less frequented, called Cavi Borgo (closer to Sestri Levante), and the more modern (closer to Lavagna). According to some historical sources, the origin of the toponym Cavi is to be found in the distortion from the Ligurian language of the word capo or from the simpler "cave", the latter recalling the ancient slate quarries in the immediate hinterland.
