The city of Varese rises on the shores of the lake of the same name. It is called Città Giardino thanks to the numerous and beautiful private and public gardens that are located within the municipality. The city of Varese is located in a characteristic position, at the foot of the Sacro Monte di Varese, which is part of the Massif of the field of flowers and is home to an astronomical observatory. Varese is nestled on seven hills: the Colle di San Pedrino (402 m), the Colle di Giubiano (407 m), the Colle Campigli (453 m), the Colle di Sant'Albino (406 m), the Colle di Biumo Superiore (439 m), Colle di Montalbano (411 m) and the Colle dei Miogni (492 m). The territory of the municipality is therefore found to be between 238 and 1,150 meters above sea level. The winter in Varese suffers little from the mitigating influence of Lake Maggiore and the other smaller lakes in the province. The late-autumn and winter minimum temperatures drop frequently, even by a few degrees, below zero. It is precisely the low night temperatures that create a different climate in the areas south of this city. As in other Lombard pre-Alpine cities, fog is an uncommon phenomenon. Since 1960, it is the seat of the only Italian seat of the European School created for the children of European officials of the Joint Research Center. The Milan Malpensa and Lugano Agno airports are around 30 minutes away. The shores of Lake Maggiore are a 20-minute drive away.
