It is part of the Valle della Cupa, that is, that portion of the Salento plain, around the capital of Lecce, characterized by a large karst depression. It has about 14,000 inhabitants. Also belonging to the municipality is the northern part of the marina of Casalabate, about 10 km away, on the Adriatic Coast. Instead, traveling about 20 km westward, one reaches the Ionian coast. Squinzano's landscape is characterized by hills and fields of olive trees, which contribute to the area's natural beauty. The Mediterranean climate favors the cultivation of grapes, and Squinzano's vineyards produce high quality wines. In particular, the area is known for the production of Squinzano DOC, which is highly regarded both nationally and internationally. In addition to wine production, Squinzano also has an interesting cultural heritage. The town's historic center still retains its ancient walls and some historic churches, which attract tourists and visitors. Between 1869 and 1891 the railway station was built, which, placed in an intermediate position between Brindisi and Lecce, transformed the town into the center of the activities of the whole area. Even today the town is served by its own railway station on the Adriatic line of the State Railways. It is currently active for passenger service on the Bari-Lecce line. Squinzano is an ideal destination for wine lovers and those wishing to explore the culture and history of the Salento area. Its quality wine production and the charm of its landscape make it a must-visit place. It is best visited on foot, to discover its beautiful courtyards, facades of noble palaces and many churches.
