Location: Villafranca d'Asti, Piedmont

Villafranca d'Asti is a town of about 3,000 inhabitants in the province of Asti, about 40 km from Turin and 15 km from Asti. In the mid 1250s and 1260s, the powerful municipality of Asti, gathering the inhabitants of the previous settlements, founded a new centre on the road to Turin and France to protect the western area; its name, "Villafrancha", appears for the first time in 1257. In the 14th century, due to its position on the road, Villafranca suffered greatly from the violence of the wars, so much so that in the 15th century the settlement was moved to the hill where the present centre stands. In the 19th century it underwent considerable development, favoured by the construction of the Turin-Genoa railway line. There are many artistic monuments, such as the church of Santa Maria Assunta (17th century), Palazzo Aghemio (1700) and Palazzo Comunale (1877). The first weekend in September is the 'Vininvilla' wine and Bagna Freida festival. At the market, visitors can taste about 200 wines selected from the Vininvilla national competition for DOC and DOCG wines of the province of Asti, the most representative of the Asti area in terms of the number of wines and producers participating. All this will be combined with the best local dishes, including Bagna Freida, a typical local dish.
