YesMonopoli is an Italian municipality of 47,896 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Bari in Puglia. Monopoli means unique city and certainly still lives up to its name. In fact, the town retains intact the charm it derives from its history and traditions. On the Adriatic coast 43 km southeast of Bari, it borders the municipalities of Polignano a Mare, Conversano, Castellana-Grotte, Alberobello and Fasano. Monopoli stretches along 15 km of low and indented coastline, with numerous coves with evocative names and long sandy shores that are a safe haven for holidaymakers and tourists alike. The mediaeval centre, characterised by its churches and convents, rises again today thanks to major restoration work, such as the complex of fortifications (walls and castle), the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Amalfitana, and the sumptuous Baroque cathedral. The rural territory, made up of no less than 99 districts, covers an area of over 150 square kilometres of great natural, scenic and cultural interest. In fact, there are numerous fortified Masserie (centres for agricultural activities) also dating back to Roman times, rupestrian churches, trulli, beautiful neoclassical villas and farmhouses. Among the major tourist attractions in Monopoli are Roman (Egnatia), Byzantine (rock frescoes), Lombard, Norman (farmhouses, masserie, fortresses) and Hispane (Castle of Charles V). Not to be missed is the Feast of the Madonna della Madia (16 December and 15 August), which every year brings back to life for devout residents and numerous tourists the episode of the landing of the raft carrying an icon of the Virgin.
