Decentral heatingMarsala is the largest municipality in the province of Trapani in terms of both the number of inhabitants and the size of its territory. It is known for Garibaldi's landing and for the production of the wine of the same name, which the English considered better than Port and Madeira, so much so that they began to market it throughout the world, decreeing its success as early as the first half of the 19th century. Marsala owes its name to the Arabs (Marsa-Allah, port of God), but the original name was Lilybeo, founded by the Romans in the 3rd century A.D. and an entire area that is now the city's archaeological park has been miraculously preserved since then. It is a city embraced by the sea. Tourists are spoilt for choice, both for lovers of sandy beaches and those who prefer sporting activities, with absolutely unique pearls of landscape and nature. Along the south coast, you will find clear, green sea and beaches with fine, light-coloured sand, which may be free or with bathing establishments. If you have small children or are incurable sportsmen, move to the north coast, where the sea forms a sort of lagoon called 'Stagnone'. Among the small islands that make it up, the Phoenician Mothia stands out, a true open-air museum set in a natural botanical garden. Finally, the Stagnone is also ideal for those who enjoy water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing. Here, in fact, the frequent wind and shallow waters allow even the least able to learn without effort.
