Ottiglio is a municipality of Monferrato in the province of Alessandria, which is built on a hill. Two buildings stand at the highest point: the castle and the parish church, which dominate the landscape and can be seen from miles away. Ottiglio's panorama presents itself with many small houses perched on the hill, creating the illusion of a fairytale village. Walking up its narrow streets towards the top, you are immersed in a medieval atmosphere that will transport you back in time. Worth visiting are the church of San Germano located in a scenic and evocative spot, the castle built in brick and tuff, which is also scenic, the Infernot Carlini (a historic wine cellar carved into the stone) and the hamlet of Moleto (a small historic hamlet of Ottiglio, which has been reborn in recent years thanks to tourism. Worth mentioning is the nearby Moncalvo with its characteristic historic centre consisting of the medieval village, with narrow streets, steep ramps, steep alleys and imposing palaces, and the many restaurants and typical craft shops. There are several opportunities to experience Moncalvo throughout the year. In fact, many are the festivals and markets that are organised, among which the well-known truffle fair that takes place in October stands out above all others. The event boasts historical traditions dating back to the 14th century, when the Moncalvo truffle was the official ambassador of the Monferrato lands to all the European courts. A destination for many Italian and foreign tourists, this area rich in vineyards and rolling hills is easily reached from Asti and Casale Monferrato in twenty minutes by car and from Turin, Milan and Genoa in about an hour. Riding stables, golf courses and routes among the vineyards and hills to be travelled by bicycle or on foot are just some of the many activities that can be done surrounded by beautiful landscapes. Monferrato, which has deservedly become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the ideal place to come and live, even if only for a few months of the year, far from the chaos of the big cities.
