Marsala is the largest municipality in the province of Trapani, both in terms of population and territorial size. It is known for Garibaldi’s landing and for the production of its namesake wine, which the English considered superior to Port and Madeira. They began marketing it worldwide, leading to its success as early as the first half of the 19th century. Marsala owes its name to the Arabs (Marsa-Allah, port of God), but its original name was Lilybaeum, founded by the Romans in the 3rd century AD. Remarkably, an entire area has been preserved since then, now representing the city's archaeological park. Marsala is a city embraced by the sea. Tourists are spoiled for choice, whether they are beach lovers or prefer sports activities, with absolutely unique gems from a landscape and naturalistic point of view. Along the southern coast, you’ll find clear green waters, beaches with light, fine sand, either free or with beach resorts. If you have small children or are avid sports enthusiasts, head towards the northern coast, where the sea forms a sort of lagoon called the “Stagnone.” Among the small islands within it, Phoenician Mothia stands out, a true open-air museum set in a natural botanical garden. Finally, the Stagnone is ideal for those who enjoy water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing. Here, frequent winds and shallow waters make it easy for even beginners to learn without difficulty.
