The first has as its historical center two residential nuclei. The locality Castello, which can be dated around the twelfth century, and the locality Villa, which was formed around the first half of the eighteenth century. Ponte Tresa has much more recent origins, around 1846, after the construction of the bridge. In the fifties began a remarkable development of Lavena Ponte Tresa due to the border. The Municipality of Lavena Ponte Tresa is served by rail transport that connects Varese-Milan-Lugano-Locarno, by the lake with its boats serving Lake Lugano and finally by public transport on wheels, buses, which serves Varese and Luino. The municipality is also served by the main educational institutions, kindergarten, primary school, secondary school, as well as by the main services, banks, post office, library. The Swiss border is only 800 metres away, while the centre of the provincial capital, Varese, and the motorway to Milan are 20 km away. The coast of Lake Maggiore is easily reachable in 12 km. Malpensa International Airport is 60 km away.
