Location: Zoagli, Liguria

Located halfway between Chiavari and Rapallo, the village of Zoagli has ancient origins: prehistoric settlement, fief of the noble family of Fieschi of Lavagna and from the XIII century, dominion of the Republic of Genoa. At that time Zoagli became famous in the world for its production of precious silk velvets; the weaving activity was thus as important as the maritime activities. Today, the shield of Zoagli shows the symbolic colours of the two major brotherhoods: the blue of the sailors and the yellow of the weavers, with the effigy of the two towers built in 1500 to defend the village from pirate attacks. In the nineteenth century Zoagli is the destination of an élite tourism and maintains the tradition of reserved hospitality. Zoagli offers evocative landscapes that have fascinated famous artists such as Nietzsche, Kandinsky, Tosi, Sem Benelli, Ezra Pound. Today Zoagli is still characterized by a calm and refined beauty, which can be found in the “creuze”, narrow streets running between villas and olive oil trees, as well as along the Lungomare Canevaro, a rock path windings near the sea. Zoagli is charming even below the sea level; just in front of the Rotonda Grande, about 9 meters deep, there is the statue of the Madonna del Mare, realized by the sculptor Marian Hastianatte. This realization enriches the artistic and tourist heritage of the fishing village and it is the perfect destination for fans of underwater explorations. The bars and restaurants overlooking the square, together with the surrounding headlands and coves, are the ideal destination for a quiet but exciting vacation.
