Located a few kilometers from the center of Santarcangelo, in the hamlet of S. Martino dei Mulini, one can admire a tower dating back to the mid-14th century. It is the "Torre la Tomba," built around 1350. In the Middle Ages, la Tomba was a fortified farm (with manor house), that is, a protected and defended place for those who lived outside the citadel walls. The tower is 22 meters high, has a rectangular plan and is adorned at the top with Ghibelline battlements. From historical texts, we learn that the building, purchased and fortified by a wealthy Rimini man named Fusso de' Battagli in 1345, was sacked by Galeotto Malatesta in 1376. Remaining traces of the old walls suggest that the tower was part of a complex of buildings contained within a quadrangular enclosure, defended on one side by the mill moat. In Romagna, there were numerous localities with this type of construction; these include the Tomb of S. Mauro Pascoli and the Tomb of S. Giovanni in Marignano dating from around the same period.
