Via San Francesco: a walk through history, ancient buildings but also through bookshops, coin shops, antique shops; a mirror of ancient artisan traditions. The route along via Portici Alti, as it was called by the Paduans, begins from what was the south-west entrance to the city, Porta Pontecorvo. Taking via San Francesco you can admire, on the left, the Basilica del Santo and on the right the offshoots of the Giardino Treves, designed by Jappelli. At the end of the street, on the right, just before the southern wing of the Bo', we see the façade of the now-defunct Palazzo Trieste in neoclassical style, home in the nineteenth century to the Crescini printing house where the weekly "Il Caffè Pedrocchi" was printed. We arrive at the "Canton del Gallo", that is, at the intersection with via Roma and via VIII Febbraio, so called because of the presence of an inn that had a rooster as its sign. This is where Via San Francesco ends, once a single street that ran as far as Pontecorvo, without the "fracture" that we encounter today with the suppression of Ponte S. Lorenzo (as well as the creation of Riviera Ponti Romani) and the opening of Piazza Antenore.
