Location: Borgo San Dalmazzo, Piedmont

Founded as a Roman oppidum between 14 B.C. and 14 A.D., the town took the name Pedona, later becoming Curtis in 969, Sanctus Dalmatius in 1098 and Burgus Sancti Dalmacii in 1167, in honour of the evangelising saint. The territory of Borgo San Dalmazzo is bordered by the orographic left of the Gesso stream to the south-east and partly by the orographic right of the Stura river to the west. Within the municipality of Borgo San Dalmazzo, a number of special places of great historical and environmental interest have been identified, deserving of protection and enhancement, including the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrato, which stands on the top of a hill, from which there is an excellent view of the Cuneo plain, the surrounding valleys (Gesso, Vermenagna and Stura) and the long Bisalta ridge (from Bric Costa Rossa to Cima Besimauda). Today the town is an important craft and industrial centre at the crossroads of three valleys, well known for its snail-based cuisine. An important transit centre for connections with the nearby Ligurian Riviera and the Côte d'Azur, which can be reached in just over an hour, in recent years Borgo San Dalmazzo has become an increasingly successful trade fair centre. Three are the most prestigious appointments organised during the year: in March, ‘Un Borgo di cioccolato’, an event dedicated to ‘gluttony’; in April, the ‘Fiera di San Giorgio’, a spring fair, with the flavours, fragrances, colours and tastes of spring; in December, the ‘Fiera Fredda’, a centuries-old event dedicated to snails.
