The first step in the establishment of a seminary in Padua was the appointment, in obedience to the Council of Trent, of four commissioners assigned to this task by Bishop Girolamo Vielmi, auxiliary to Cardinal Alvise Pisani—who was the titular head of the diocese but mostly absent—during the diocesan synod on August 17, 1566. This was followed by a series of measures to provide the institute with adequate financial resources, until December 29, 1569, when Cardinal Pisani and the commissioners selected forty clerics to be admitted to the institute, with a praeceptor appointed to oversee their formation. This marked the actual beginning of the Tridentine seminary in the Diocese of Padua, one of the first in Italy, just three years after the conclusion of the Council.
