It is called the Garden City thanks to the numerous and beautiful private and public gardens that are located within the municipality. The city of Varese is located in a characteristic position, at the foot of the Sacred Mount of Varese which is part of the Massif of the Field of Flowers and is home to an astronomical observatory. Varese is situated on seven hills: the Colle di San Pedrino (402 m), the Colle di Giubiano (407 m), the Colle Campigli (453 m), the Colle di Sant'Albino (406 m), the Colle di Biumo Superiore (439 m), the Colle di Montalbano (411 m) and the Colle dei Miogni (492 m). The territory of the municipality is therefore between 238 and 1,150 meters above sea level. The Varese winter suffers little from the mitigating influence of Lake Maggiore and the other minor lakes of the province. The minimum temperatures in late-autumn and winter often drop, even by a few degrees, below zero. It is precisely the low night temperatures, which create a different climate to the areas south of this city. As in other Lombard pre-Alpine towns, fog is a rare phenomenon. Since 1960, it is home to the only Italian seat of the European School created for the children of European officials of the Joint Research Centre. Milan Malpensa and Lugano Agno airports are about 30 minutes away. The shores of Lake Maggiore can be reached in 20 minutes by car.
