Arona, an important historical and tourist centre, lies on the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore. A town with a rich history, it was long in the hands of the wealthy and powerful Borromeo family: St Charles Borromeo was in fact born here, in the castle, in 1538. The most important and fascinating monument is undoubtedly the colossus of St. Charles Borromeo, which, with a height of about 35 metres, ranks second among the tallest indoor statues in the world, preceded only by the Statue of Liberty. Arona offers tourists a variety of activities: an historic centre full of shops and restaurants, a beautiful lakeside promenade to stroll along, and lidos and small beaches where they can spend hot summer days Arona is about 80 km from Milan, making it easily accessible by car or train. The town is well connected to the Milanese metropolis via the A8 motorway and the railway, which allow you to get there in about 1 hour. Arona is only about 20 km from Milan-Malpensa International Airport. Its proximity to Malpensa makes the city a strategic departure point for national and international travel. Access to the airport is facilitated by the SS336 motorway, which makes it possible to reach the airport in less than 30 minutes. Thanks to its location, the city is easily accessible from Lugano, Bellinzona and other Swiss towns in Ticino. Arona is very close to two prestigious golf courses: the Castelconturbia Golf Club (about 10 km) and the Bogogno Golf Resort (about 15 km). Both are considered among the best in Italy. Arona is located at the foot of the Alps, a short distance from the peaks and ski resorts of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola that can be reached in less than an hour.
