Locarno, with its 15,000 inhabitants, is nestled between Lake Maggiore and the southern foothills of the Alps. A few hours’ drive separate the traveller from a holiday paradise without equal. The drive through the incomparable scenery of the Alpine passes is an experience in itself. In addition, the 5.5 km long Mappo - Morettina car tunnel was opened in 1996, directly connecting Tenero with the centre of Locarno and considerably reducing traffic. The mild Mediterranean climate favours an early spring, a long and hot summer with little rainfall and an autumn that lasts until November. The cultural highlight is the film festival, which takes place annually in August.
