The key skills of the estate agent's profession

The profession of Real Estate Sales Agent involves managing the relationship between a property-owning client and a potential client, either a tenant or a buyer.

This involves prospecting negotiation and loyalty and the sales.

The success of our Agents depends on a number of factors, such as the level of investment, the professional environment, the positioning of the company, the working and communication tools and, of course, their skills!

On the one hand, there are the skills linked to knowledge that we can measure and demonstrate. On the other hand, there are those linked to personal traits and characteristics. Both are fundamental.

If we were to make a list of the key skills that make our best sales agents successful, we could mention :

Hard" skills: Know-how

  • Knowledge of foreign languages: as Engel & Völkers is an international company, knowledge of several languages is a real plus, French being of primary importance

  • Academic training: if possible in the real estate or commercial field

  • Mastery of office tools such as Pack Office, Internet, Social Networks

  • Knowledge of property law

  • Knowledge of sales processes

  • Understanding of the property market: knowledge of prices, market trends and specific features of the sector, etc

  • Knowledge of town planning regulations

Soft skills: People skills

  • Ability to adapt, solve problems, manage time and, of course, negotiate

  • Creativity - to deal with the unexpected

  • Willingness and appetite to learn and a taste for challenge

  • Autonomy, thoroughness, organisation, tenacity, commitment

  • Ability to manage stress

  • Diplomacy, as remuneration depends 100% on investment

  • Ability to listen and understand customer needs

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Impeccable presentation
