La Californie of Cannes in a few words
Among the 10 neighbourhoods that make up the City of Cannes, La Californie, which overlooks the bay, is undoubtedly one of the most exclusive. It is bordered by Pointe Croisette, in the South, and Le Cannet in the North, and is part of the Cannes-Est canton.
La Californie is a residential neighbourhood, renowned for the elegance of its buildings and the preservation of its green spaces. It attracts many owners, especially those looking for a second home in the sun. Living in this district is the preserve of the elite, considering that the average income of its inhabitants is about 30,000 euros.
The sun shines all year round and the site attracts tourists for its oriental gardens - in fact, La Californie has been awarded the label "Villes et Villages Fleuris" (Towns and Villages in Bloom) with 4 stars out of 4. However, it is situated away from the main tourist trail so its inhabitants can enjoy a calm lifestyle.
The villas of La Californie
La Californie's reputation as a high-end neighbourhood has been consolidated through the construction of many exceptional places.
Villa Fiorentina, built in 1880, is a delight for the eyes with its Italian-style gardens, which were laid out on the terrace during the First World War. It is now a private condominium registered in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage.
Villa Picasso, also known as Villa Californie, bought by the famous painter from which it takes its name, saw the birth of many of his works including "La Baie de Cannes". This villa with an eclectic style, enthroned in the middle of a park with its private swimming pool, was later abandoned by Picasso and restored by his granddaughter who renamed it the "Pavillon de Flore".
Also located on the heights of Cannes, is the Villa Rothschild, which was built in 1881 in place of Lord Brougham's villa, at the request of the Baroness who gave it its name, seduced by its neo-classical style. Following its confiscation during the occupation of the city, it has become one of the most romantic public properties in Cannes and now hosts the multimedia library and many cultural events.
Nicknamed the 'hill of billionaires', La Californie attracts the most fortunate. It was in this neighbourhood that one of the most expensive real estate transactions in France took place in 2002, with the purchase by the Khalifa group of Villa Bagatelle for 37 million euros. This villa has welcomed famous celebrities such as Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu, Sting and Bono.
An exceptional place where the living is easy
The Villa Domergue, with its Venetian inspirations, invites guests to enjoy its Italian gardens, as well as the artistic and cultural exhibitions that take place regularly in the neighbourhood of La Californie.
For the more active among you, a walking tour is organised every year, starting from the King Albert Avenue, the iconic avenue of the neighbourhood, to discover the historical treasures of this area.
