Description
Property located on the side of a Menton hill benefiting from a sea view and a privileged exposure, this property is made up of several villas on land planted with Mediterranean species. The main villa "La Villa Blanche" was built by the painter Graham Sutherland, one of the masters of modern English painting. It is distinguished by its rationalist style with large glass openings to let in natural light. It consists of a series of rooms used as a living room, office, dining room as well as two bedrooms, these face south and give access to a terrace. The villa-workshop, listed as a Historic Monument, called Villa Tempe a Païa built in 1934 is the second residence created by the designer architect, Eileen Gray after the better known villa E 1027 in Roquebrune Cap Martin. It consists of a living room extended by a terrace, a dining room, two bedrooms separated by a small vestibule, a bathroom and a kitchen. You enter the house via the garden, an exterior staircase and the terrace. It takes up four of the five principles of modern architecture defined by Le Corbusier in 1927, the roof terrace, the free plan, the strip windows and the free facades. As an illustration of this last point, we can cite the wall which isolates the terrace from the road with its horizontal window which aligns with that of the facade where two distinct rooms, the living room and the bedroom share the same strip window . The house, however, combines the functionalist principles and materials (concrete and brick) of modern architecture with references to local constructions. It still contains the original fittings designed by Eileen Gray. The entire property is immersed in nature on a plot of 3.6 hectares.
