Its history begins in very distant times: finds from the Roman age are testimony to it. There are many treasures of Viggiù. Among them is the historic centre, unique of its kind, characterized by typical court houses, with entrances adorned with artistic stone portals, where stonemasons' workshops were found. The famous "Stone of Viggiù" was one of the many stones extracted from the surrounding hills; it was used as building and decoration material and in the past this led the area to be a place of great artistic importance. This characteristic has made Viggiù known as the village of the “Picasass”, since in the past, passing through the streets, one could only hear the bells of hammers beating on the stone. There are also many churches enriched by the works of local artists. In the heart of the village, in a lovely setting of greenery, we find Villa Borromeo, an elegant late-neoclassical building, ideal for daily excursions.
