The South Course is well known as an example of excellence and technical rigour, having hosted the most important national and international golf competitions in the Algarve region.
Opened in 1974, the Quinta do Lago Championship Course was designed by the American golf architect William Mitchell, who introduced greens, bunkers and tees in line with American standards. A pioneer in the Algarve region, the course soon gained a prestigious reputation and became a benchmark on the European Tour Course.
Characterised by a layout confined by the Ria Formosa estuary and its Natural Park habitat and wildlife, the course stretches across slopes wooded by stone pines, in harmony with wildflowers and lakes that attract a wide range of waterfowl species.
This demanding course, with sandy soil and a length of 6,488 metres (par 72), has generous fairways, undulating contours, dog legs and wide, uneven greens strategically hampered by bunkers (the first in Portugal to use white marble granules).
This configuration demands a high level of strategy from golfers over the course of its 18 holes, whose signature hole on the 15th hole, a par 3, requires a long shot over a lake to a green lined with pine trees.
The various national and international competitions that have taken place there stand out as proof of this technical demand, particularly as the venue for the Portuguese Open, which has been held on eight occasions, with Colin Montgomerie's participation in 1989 being the highlight, when he won his first European title with a record round of 63 strokes under par.
However, the championship nature of the course doesn't discourage amateur golfers. Although the 8th, 15th and 18th are challenging for low handicap players, the variability of the course's difficulty provides an engaging challenge for golfers of all levels and abilities.
