Quinta do Lago has experienced a significant transformation since visionary businessman André Jordan conceived the idea in the early 1970s. Progressing into an exclusive golf resort, it is nestled in around 2000 hectares of green fields and pine forests, alongside the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria Formosa Natural Park. In 1974, the American golf architect William Mitchell crafted the initial layout of 27 holes for the Quinta do Lago golf course, incorporating greens, bunkers, and tees that aligned with American standards for the Algarve.
Over the years, the course has been extended and improved. In 1989, 9 holes were added by American golf architecs: Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore, forming the North and South courses. The original 9 holes became the North course and the first 2 holes formed the South course. In the early 1990s, Joe Lee later added a new course, now holes 6 to 14. In 2003, the North course saw substantial changes under Rocky Roquemore. One of the most striking features of the course is the captivating 12th hole, a par 4 that extends for 361 meters and surrounds a 3-acre lake. The design of the hole skirts the lake in a surprising way, presenting golfers with a challenging approach shot to a wide, undulating green.
The North Course temporarily closed its doors in December 2013 for a major renovation led by American golf architect Beau Welling, in collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley. An investment of 9.6 million euros was made for a complete renovation programme, according to strict specifications. The aim was to modernize the course's infrastructure, improve user-friendliness and introduce sustainable water and turf management solutions. This extensive remodeling included the reconstruction of greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and drainage systems, as well as cart paths, using cutting-edge technology
The challenges for golfers were increased through a combination of undulating greens, strategically placed bunkers and water obstacles. The aesthetics of the course have been given a significant boost through the use of long grass of the species "Eragostis curvula", commonly known as "Weeping Lovegrass", which serves to "frame" the course and establish new habitats for indigenous species. To minimize the environmental impact, recycled water and solar energy are used to maintain the pitch, the grassed areas have been reduced and new habitats have been created for plants and animals. To accommodate players of all skill levels, four sets of tees have been introduced on each hole. The renovated North course was unveiled to the public in October 2014, receiving widespread acclaim for its impressive transformation.
