It was from Lagos that Gil Eanes set sail, the navigator who proved that the world did not end at Cape Bojador after all, and that the sea was not inhabited by monsters. Historically connected to the sea, the town was originally called Lacobriga when settled by the Celts in 2000 BC. Due to its location and economic importance, the city of Lagos has become a focal point for the Portuguese Discoveries from the 15th century and even, in the following century, recognized as capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve.
More than sixty percent of nature conservation area makes the landscape of territory particularly attractive. In respect to non-built up áreas Lagos has convenient open landscape.
With the Quality Coast programme, the Coastal & Marine Union – EUCC aims to establish a world-wide network of coastal communities that share similar values on sustainable development, nature and biodiversity, cultural heritage and identity, and social responsibility, at the same time maintaining high standards in the quality of their tourism.
In 2014 Lagos got a Gold Award and the following positive aspects were stated:
-Many opportunities to observe marine and coastal wildlife in their natural environment: boat trips to watch dolphins, bird watching and grotto trips
-All beaches and marina have been awarded with Blue Flag
-Rich cultural site with many important monumental and historical buildings
The promotion of Lagos aims to present the city as an authentic experience, allowing the visitors to meet the traditions, heritage and culture
