"The "Banho 29" is a mix of folk tradition and ritual passed from parents to children with the belief that the bath that night is worth 29 baths. Its origins are uncertain. Whether from very ancient times and linked to the rites of late summer or resulting from the Arab heritage, the custom remained. The people of the fields no longer come in lively groups, with their donkeys and carts, but the locals continue to fulfill the tradition. Today, they are groups of young people, more revelers and less rituals, that take advantage of that night to bake chorizo and to tell stories around a bonfire. At midnight the time of bathing takes a lot of diving into the water sparingly illuminated by the flashes of fireworks. In Lagos, it is in Solaria and in Praia da Batata that there is a greater number of enthusiasts, gathered by the proximity of the musical animation and the contest of old swimsuits. The tradition is also fulfilled in Meia Praia, with enthusiasts grouped around the bonfires lined up along the beach. They drink, eat, tell stories and sing before and after the traditional dip in the sea. "
