The most eagerly awaited traditional festival in Lagos and Luz takes place on 29 August 2024.
‘Tradition and folklore say that bathing on 29 August scares away demons and is worth twenty-nine baths.’ Its origins are uncertain, whether they come from very ancient times and are linked to the end-of-summer rites, or are the result of Arab heritage. The truth is that, today, it is one of the most popular traditions in Lagos and a reason for a big celebration.
In addition to the nightly bathing, there will be historical re-enactments, food and drink, parades of traditional and modern bathing costumes and lots of musical entertainment, which will be divided between the city (Cais da Solaria and Jardim da Constituição) and the parish of Luz, with the latter including three stages in one night.
